Last week we were away on a holiday to Coorg where Nitu and I saw a little girl of about 2 ½ walking down stairs without support. We have been extremely protective of Niyati and till date are very anxious when she tries doing anything on her own. She is almost never allowed to walk without someone holding her hand.

Today on our way back from our Karate class I happened to notice that Niyati was not comfortable getting down stairs without support. I mentally recalled the sprightly 2 ½ from Coorg and mentioned that Niyati should try and walk down stairs without support, citing the little girl from Coorg as an example. To this, Nitu quipped “Ma I know to climb stairs on my own as I learnt that first. I need to practice getting down as I learnt that later. That girl has learnt to climb down first and maybe she cannot climb up.”

I was zapped.

Mixed fruit jam

Much to Arun’s delight Niyati has taken a great liking to a particular flavor of jam “mixed fruit”. So much, that I overheard her discussing seriously with her father on whether she will be allowed to eat mixed fruit jam after she gets married, as she did not know if it would be allowed in her husband’s house. I grinned as Arun explained that after she was married it would be her own home and she could eat anything she liked. He also promised to gift her a huge jar of her favourite mixed fruit jam on her wedding day and ensure a never ending supply ever after !

How do you run a country?

Lately, Niyati has been enquiring a lot on what it takes to lead a nation. She is keen on becoming Prime Minister as she gets to “run” the country. From the kindness of her heart she wanted me to become Prime Minister first. I absent mindedly replied that I knew nothing about running a country, to which she cheekily replied “Ma, all you have to do is make everyone in the country run”.

We both burst out laughing. Well, to all of you reading this, make sure to take an autograph the next time you meet her. You may be fortunate to catch her before she gets busy “running the country”.

Good News!

Niyati had appeared for her yellow belt assessment on 28^th Mar and was promoted to Yellow belt yesterday. She was thrilled and so were we.

We are all set to move to Bangalore and she is going through severe separation pangs. She will be missing her friends at Taekwondo, Kathak, and most of all her friends from school! Hmmm…well nothing can be done about that, except that I will try and keep in touch with her friends for her.

Gotta rush now as we are ready to leave for our Taekwondo class. I’m so proud of you Niyati. God Bless!

The fight between the Yawn and the Sleep

The title of this post looks straight from a Harry “Peter” (that’s Nitu’s version of Harry Potter) book. Nitu is currently enjoying her winter break from school and is also recovering from a bad bout of chest congestion. It has been a while since she has stopped taking a nap in the afternoon after school. Much to Arun’s disappointment. He loves to cuddle up with her and enjoy a quiet nap. Nitu is or rather was too small to resist a nap and it was me who decided that she needs to stop taking a nap in the afternoon. A nap meant getting up post 5.30 in the evening which pushed her bedtime to past 11.45 PM and made it a huge challenge to wake her up for school the next day. No afternoon nap meant more play time and made her better equipped to cope up with her Taekwondo & Kathak classes.

Today Nitu was yawning after lunch which prompted Arun to point out that she was sleepy. Nitu came up with this terrific story…… she said that there was a problem and that her yawn and sleep had had a fight which meant that although she was yawning she was not sleepy. I was really zapped!

Visiting friends

Times are changing for sure. Recently there have been numerous signs pointing that Niyati is not a baby any more…… The most recent one being yesterday. Niyati was invited to a friend’s (Raeka) house for a day of play & fun. Although this was not Niyati’s first invitation, this was the first time I had left her all by her self without supervision from a family member or domestic help. The prequel to this is that Niyati had visited this friend on a previous occasion with me tagging along. Next it was Raeka’s turn to visit us, which she did some time back. Shalini, Raeka’s mother was trusting or bold enough to send Raeka home with us after school. And when Raeka invited Niyati it was her turn to go over without a companion and my turn to trust.

Initially, Nitu had several reservations on whether she would feel comfortable without a family member around. But she finally mustered enough courage and went over. She had a great time and was very upset that she could not stay longer when I went over to fetch her. The little girls have decided to do this more often. Infact I over heard them discussing that it was fun to come over straight after school!

Daily Schedule

Niyati has finally adjusted to her new school and looks forward to her 20 min play time after school. This has now become a ritual, a part of her daily schedule. Niyati, her classmate Raeka and another toddler Pankti really freak out after school.

Even though it is really hot and sultry at around 38 degrees in the afternoon, seeing Nitu enjoy herself has made me ignore the heat and welcome the dust that she manages to get on herself everyday.

Niyati was always over protected and was very timid in anything involving physical activity. She hated getting her hands dirty. She has now picked up though….doesn’t care too much about the dust on her clothes and hands and can tackle virtually all the obstacles in the school “Jungle Gym”. Way to go baby!

Taekwondo

These days Niyati is very excited about her Taekwondo classes every evening. She clung to her uniform when it was handed over and insisted on wearing it at once. I took a few pics but, unfortunately they are blurred. Nevertheless, I’m still posting these as she posed for some wonderful stances.

Update

Have finally managed to juggle my inclination and time to update this post for Niyati. It’s been a long 5 months since I posted anything on her blog.

Life has been good. A gold certificate from school (DPS), a great (month long) trip to Mumbai during her summer break, and most importantly… a change of school were the highlights of the past few months. Niyati now attends Strawberry Fields (8th Jun) and has been moved out of her first school DPS.

The other highlight was celebrating her 4^th Birthday (10th May) with her friends from DPS. Some more pics..

And the absolute latest piece is that she has been enrolled for Taekwondo classes (26^th Aug) which she has been attending for the past 1 week.

Heart beat!

This morning Niyati wanted to know if I had a heart. (This may be a result of learning parts of the body at school). She wanted to feel my heart beating and then wanted me to feel her’s. After this little ceremony she wondered why her heart was beating faster than mine. Before I could gather my wits and provide an explanation that would satisfy her curious mind, she came up with an incredible answer to her own question… she said, “Ma my heart is new so it’s beating faster. Yours is older and so it’s slow”!!

Couldn’t have said it better myself!
