I am typing this from a hotel room in Florida, where we have come for some specialized biomedical treatments for our son's autism. There are qualified doctors, at great risk to their careers, who are providing these treatments, but the conventional medical establishment has so far rejected these as quackery. But parents who have gone through it swear by it. There is good scientific reasons to suspect why they would work, and published papers are emerging reporting on studies.
But we cannot afford to wait for all the facts to be known and treatments get "approved". Autism is known to respond well when the intervention is early enough, but the later we wait, the lower the odds of recovery. So I believe we have to go ahead, even if the medical establishment takes its sweet time. In any event, the medical establishment has nothing much else to offer by way of help. Even the widely accepted behavioral therapies are only grudgingly accepted by the estalishment.
I have seen any number of studies debunking the mercury connection to autism, yet, I remain unpersuaded that no connection exists. Mercury is a known neuro-toxin, and the effects of mercury poisoning do correspond closely with known symptoms of autism. And it is an established fact (accepted by the establishment) that vaccines have contained mercury. Yet, they rule out the connection, and even question the sanity of people who make the connection.
The issue is the tendency of the medical establishment to speak authoritatively, even when they really don't know. I always thought most doctors as arrogant know-alls, and this only further confirms my suspicion.
